Playful to A1 – My New German Course with Comics and 144 Learning Objectives

Learning German does not always have to look like a traditional textbook course.

That is exactly why I am currently creating my new course “Playful to A1”.

The course is designed for beginners who want to learn German as simply, visually and step by step as possible. Instead of long explanations and complicated texts, you will find comics with simple dialogues, lots of pictures, audio recordings and clear everyday situations.

144 Sections – 144 Learning Objectives

“Playful to A1” consists of 144 sections.

Each section focuses on one specific learning objective. The learning objectives come from my main course “Relaxed to A1”, but here they are presented in a simpler, more visual and more playful way.

The learning objectives of the first of the 144 sections are:

first contact with the language
hearing and recognising your first words
developing a feeling for pronunciation
getting a first sense of German word order

The course is primarily based on level A1. However, if you work through all the sections carefully, listen a lot, read along, repeat the sentences aloud and review regularly, you can also build knowledge that goes beyond A1 and takes you towards A2.

Even if your German is already around B1 level, the course does not have to be boring for you. The comics contain plenty of everyday language, and the characters talk about topics and situations that can also be interesting and useful for more advanced learners.

You can therefore also use the course to review important basics, close gaps in your knowledge, strengthen your vocabulary and further develop your feel for the German language.

A1 as a Foundation – with A2 and B1 in Mind

The same principle applies to both courses: all topics that are important for level A1 are definitely included.

In addition, the courses also cover further topics that are already suitable for A2 and, in some cases, B1.

There are several reasons for this:

Words and structures are easier to remember when they are repeated in different contexts.
Learners practise not only for an exam, but also for real everyday situations.
A broader vocabulary makes it easier to understand unfamiliar expressions.
A variety of topics provides more diversity and can increase motivation.
Previously learned basics are repeatedly used in new situations and therefore become more firmly established.
This makes the transition from A1 to A2 and later to B1 easier.
More advanced learners can also use the courses to review the basics, close gaps and further develop their feel for the language.

The aim is therefore not to introduce complicated language as early as possible. Instead, the additional topics are intended to help you use what you have learned more confidently, flexibly and in as many different situations as possible.

Learning with Short Stories and Comics

Each section tells a short story.

The characters talk to each other, react to one another and experience simple situations. This means that you do not learn new words and structures in isolation, but directly in context.

The sentences are kept as short and simple as possible.

At the same time, you will also regularly encounter complete and natural sentences so that you can gradually become familiar with real everyday German.

A Real Comic with Lots of Pictures

“Playful to A1” is genuinely structured like a picture story.

Each scene consists of several pictures showing the characters talking to each other. This often allows you to understand what is happening and what the characters mean simply by looking at the picture.

What the characters say is also written underneath each picture.

Each sentence comes with an audio recording. You can listen to the sentence, read along at the same time and then repeat it aloud yourself.

This means that you learn with pictures, written text and spoken language at the same time.

Learning Words with Pictures Instead of Translation Lists

Each part of the comic also contains illustrated vocabulary lists.

The words are not listed side by side in two languages. Instead, each word is accompanied by a suitable picture, and the word in your target language appears directly on that picture.

Because you read the course bilingually, the corresponding article in your native language shows the same picture with the word in your native language.

The explained words always appear in the same order in both language versions.

This allows you to match the words very easily without having to search for them or look them up in a traditional vocabulary list.

In this way, you learn new words directly through pictures while still being able to check their meaning whenever you need to.

Clear Numbering for Easy Orientation

All pictures and all sentences in the course are numbered.

This means that you always know exactly where you are.

If you have the two language versions open next to each other, the numbers immediately show you which picture and which sentence belong together.

Even in longer comics, you therefore do not lose track and can easily switch between your native language and your target language.

Your Native Language Always Stays Beside You

First, you open the article in your native language.

This allows you to understand the instructions.

Then you also open the German version and display both articles side by side in Google Chrome using split view.

To do this, right-click on the tab in your target language and select the split-view option from the menu.

This allows you to check the meaning of a sentence at any time without constantly having to look up words in a dictionary.

The aim is to make learning as relaxed as possible.

Listening Is Always Part of the Course

The sentences come with audio recordings.

You can listen to the texts, read along and then repeat the sentences aloud yourself.

This is especially important at the beginning because you are not only learning new words but also developing a feeling for the sound, rhythm and pronunciation of the German language.

Who Is “Playful to A1” For?

The course is especially designed for people who find traditional language courses too complicated, too theoretical or too demanding.

Maybe you simply want to understand first.

Maybe you want to see lots of pictures.

Maybe you prefer reading short sentences instead of studying long grammar rules.

Or perhaps you simply want to discover German slowly and without pressure.

If so, “Playful to A1” could be exactly right for you.

The course can also be interesting if you are already a little more advanced and would like to review important basics.

Why Is the Course Called “Playful to A1”?

Because learning really is allowed to be playful here.

You read comics.

You observe characters.

You listen to short dialogues.

You recognise words you have seen before.

You learn new words through pictures.

You compare two language versions with each other.

And almost without noticing it, you build more and more German knowledge section by section.

At the same time, the 144 learning objectives ensure that there is a clear learning path behind all these little stories.

The course may look light and playful, but it follows a clear goal:

Step by step towards A1 and beyond.

The Course Is Being Created Step by Step

“Playful to A1” is currently still in development.

You can already purchase the complete course at the pre-order price of €100 and will gradually receive access to the newly released sections.

The plan is to continue expanding the course on an ongoing basis.

A new section is currently expected to be published approximately every two weeks.

If individual comics can be created more quickly, additional sections may also be added at shorter intervals.
