International Day of Older Persons – Wisdom, Experience, and Intergenerational Dialogue

Every year on October 1st, the world celebrates the International Day of Older Persons. It was established in 1990 by the United Nations to highlight the rights, contributions, and importance of older generations. In some places, it is also known as “Senior Citizens’ Day.”

    Where is it celebrated?

This day is internationally recognized, but many countries give it special attention through events, programs, and campaigns. Community centers, schools, NGOs, and local governments often use it to raise awareness and foster connections between young and old.

    What is celebrated?

The day honors the wisdom and life experience of older people. Over decades, they have gathered stories, knowledge, and perspectives that are valuable for families and societies alike. At the same time, it emphasizes the need for protection, dignity, and participation of older persons in all areas of life.

    How is it celebrated?

Celebrations vary: some communities organize cultural events, storytelling sessions, or workshops on intergenerational exchange. Schools invite elders to share their experiences as eyewitnesses of history. Many people volunteer in care homes, make donations, or simply spend time with an older person in their neighborhood.

    Are there similar holidays?

Yes. In Japan, there is Respect for the Aged Day (Keiro no Hi) in September – a national holiday where families visit grandparents, share meals, and show appreciation. In the U.S., there is also Grandparents Day, which focuses on honoring family elders.

    What I will do today

For me, this day is an opportunity to reflect on the older people who shaped my life – grandparents, teachers, mentors, or even kind strangers. I will dedicate part of my day to offering support to someone older, whether through a visit, a conversation, or a small act of service. And of course, I’m writing this blog post to inspire you to join in.

    How you can celebrate

    • Call your grandparents or another older relative today.
    • Ask about a story from their life you haven’t heard yet.
    • Volunteer your time in a senior community or support a project.
    • Write down one piece of wisdom you’ve learned from an elder.
