To take this German test and still be able to look up a word in your native language at any time, open this article in Google Chrome.
Then right-click on “Deutsch” below the title of the blog article.
A menu will open. The third option is:
“Open Link in Split View”
Click on it. The German article will now open next to this English article.
You can scroll down separately on both sides. This means that if you do not understand something in German, you can always look at the English version on the left and check the corresponding passage in your native language.
Be aware: Every time you look up a word on the left-hand side in your native language, make a tally mark on a piece of paper or in your notes app. This way, you will know how many words you had to look up.
You can also write down each word you looked up. Later, you can go through your vocabulary list again and revise the words.

The friends Tina and Thomas have not seen each other for six weeks. Today they meet in front of a restaurant.

Thomas: I’m fine too, thank you.
Tina: Where were you during the last six weeks?
Thomas: First, I was in hospital.
Tina: In hospital? Why?
Thomas: I had a broken leg.
Tina: Oh no!
Thomas: After that, I spent two weeks in rehabilitation.
Tina: And then?
Thomas: Then I had some time off.
Tina: Where were you?
Thomas: In Austria, by a lake.
Tina: Were you able to go hiking there?
Thomas: No. I stayed in a wellness hotel.
Tina: That sounds nice.
Thomas: And you? Where were you?
Tina: I was in Egypt for two weeks.
Thomas: Nice!
Tina: Yes, it was wonderful. After that, I went back to work.
2. At the restaurant

11. Perfect tense or simple past?
When do you normally use the perfect tense and when do you use the simple past in German?
More than one answer may be correct.
A. The perfect tense is mainly used when speaking. The simple past is especially common in written texts.
B. There is no difference at all between the perfect tense and the simple past.
C. The perfect tense may only be used in direct speech.
D. In spoken German, the perfect tense is always used.
E. When speaking, the perfect tense is often used. However, some very common verbs are also often used in the simple past when speaking, for example “was”, “had”, “had to”, “could” or “there was”.
F. The simple past is mainly used in spoken German.
